Out of Whack

Crazy! Is such a lovely word to describe a wonderfully deranged, extremely pleasurable fun-filled past weeks (past months, actually). Now I’m really starting to believe that life is more like a Haitian taptap or driving in the streets of Port Au Prince. It’s crazy. And the only way to make sense of it is to be crazy yourself. And if you think about it, it’s not so bad being insane; you protect yourself from going completely bonkers or being wrongfully diagnosed with clinical depression! Not really sure if that made sense but it’s 100% certain that you’ll go nuts if you live each day pretending to be sane.

Past Project. Illustration of Haitian Taptap.

But let’s be serious for a while, haven’t you noticed that modern day life is insane? Why else would humans, sacrifice their health, happiness and the best time of their lives for money/career and then later retire to make up for the time they lost, do fun stuff in pursuit of happiness while throwing away their money to recuperate their health? Insane, isn’t it?
So I say, from this point forward, let’s just loosen some screws, let go and let the world spin out of control like a taptap swooping downhill with its engine off and cheap made in China brake pads. Leave the serious stuff to people mad enough to be sane. The upside is, you’ll make better designs and illustrations once you’ve gone completely kookoo.

Digital Illustration: Le Clos, Haiti

digital illustration: le clos haiti

When somewhere new they say, “do as the Romans do.” In Haiti, well… This digital conté crayon drawing of where we used to live was an attempt in naïve style—a popular style in Haiti. Tried my best to be naïve. Unfortunately, when you’re a designer things has to make visual sense, perspective, colors, light and shadows etc. and this logic is like OS X pre-installed in your brain. Though what’s good about being a designer is even if you can’t be naïve, you can still wiggle your way out to create a half-way naïve art. Actually, more like wiggling your way into creating Frankenstein.

Illustration: Social Media in Haiti

digital illustration
Quick illustration on free time.

Some illustration done for a colleague at PubliGestion. The mastermind behind the social media department, yes I was just the department’s conspirator. It gave me a sense of fun (like we’re doing something really, really cool to change Haiti) when we were creating the social media accounts, not to mention doing the PG Blog and writing its first entry! Designing and creating all those visual elements to jump-start PubliGestion’s Social Media Department after the 7.o-you-know-what in Haiti is something that was very fun to do and I’m personally looking forward to doing this again!
So to my colleague, kudos to you and to the fun we had in changing the social media landscape in Haiti!

Cohones69 Mafia. Those were the days... when everything seemed simple.

Some illustration a year back. This is perhaps how an Asian style mafia/gang would look, without the letters on the shoulders though.

And yeah, if you miss simple days... way way way back then, I endear you to leave a comment below.

"Cat Lover"
"Where is Henri?" A custom book jacket for Henri's gift last Christmas.

Okay, let’s be happy today. It’s the weekend! Just found these illustrations that we could all get amused with. No complicated designs or effects today, just nice colors and lines.
Personally, I’m amused by how technology has evolved. Now we could draw straight in the computer using Wacom. Would really love to have a Wacom Cintiq one of these days, it’ll be a good upgrade to my Wacom Bamboo.
And I need to say it again, whitespace is not always white.

Illustration: The Tycoon

The Tycoon. Digital illustration in Photoshop. It's amazing how dreams in your head could turn into an illustration.

Modern tycoon-inspired illustration... actually more like Austin Power’s archnemesis Doctor Evil world domination kind of inspiration. A bit Chinese in theme, especially with the three dragons, Kuan Kung and the money tree on the side. Oh, the furniture is also Chinese, based on the emperor's dark hardwood chair and table.
Notice how whitespace is not always white.

Illustration: Snake & Non-representational Design

We missed last week, no activity, no visitors. Though, for the coming days and weeks, expect some serious activity from this blog—illustrations, designs and some demonstration of Photoshop-ing skills.
So, let me make it up to you on a Sunday with an illustration in India ink done a few years back when we’re all studying in art school. The two illustrations on the right is an exercise on non-representational design. To the left, a snake.
