How Much Does a Graphic Designer Cost?

time infographics from whitespacelover
I don't know if this realization is liberating or depressing. 876,600 hours to live. Unless I'm wrong. Graphic designers are not really good in math. Click infographics to enlarge.

You have 876,600 hours to live! Assuming you’ll reach your 100th birthday. If my calculation is correct: there are 24 hours in any given day. 365.25 days in a year, that’s 8,766 hours. Multiplied by 100 years, that’s 876,600 hours to live if you were born right now and if you'll reach 100 years old.
Freelancers, in-house creatives, corporate/office, NGO, factory workers etc. We all have something in common, we’re paid based on the number of hours worked. Or if you’re a Tim Ferriss fan, that’s number of hours spent looking busy inside an office.
I just realized something today; we’re not paid for our time but for our life. So when someone asks you how much is your per hour rate, think of this: you have 876, 600 hours to live. How much does your life cost?

EDIT: After a good chat with a new friend and some much needed sleep, woke up today feeling refreshed and liberated being aware that everyone has 876,600 hours to live... assuming you'll live to a hundred.

On Being a Graphic Designer in Haiti

Montagne Noir Haiti, mini landslide
We woke up one morning to this, part of the mountain at the back of our building fell. Luckily my car is safe, the rubble stopped at the nose of the car. ;-)

Graphic Designer, Montagne Noir, Haiti—I once asked for clean running water, continuous electric service and a bit of silence in an apartment. The landlord and the real estate agent looked at me as if I’m asking for some luxury item like Zafiro’s $100,000 razor made from meteorites (and yes, that razor is already on sale!). What’s next, they’ll say people need to pay taxes for their human rights?

Now I believe Maslow when he said that creativity and art ranks as one of the highest human needs that could only be satisfied once you’ve fulfilled your basic needs. It’s hard to create great designs when your head is still trying to understand how the sink could spew murky water, rice and beans all over your kitchen, mmmm smell the morning air! Or when you're still dazed on how part of the mountain fell on the parking lot crushing the neighbors' cars and making the parking lot as useful as coffee to an insomniac. This is what a graphic designer has to deal with in Haiti. Life is a bit complicated here (understatement). It’s a miracle sometimes how we could produce nice designs when the mountain is literally falling over our heads. Though, I should say, when things work life's a bliss. When it doesn't... well, it's like walking into the twilight zone mixed with the worst of Dante's inferno.
Maybe Maslow is not completely right. But I like his triangle…

Apartment in Haiti Lessons

Whitespacelover Haiti apartment
Living room / dining room where I love to work.
Much has been said about Haiti and its daily catastrophes, but not much about expats moving to a new apartment… and after months of skirmish with landlords and ladies, Whitespacelover has moved to Montagne Noir! A.K.A. my excuse for blog inactivity!
So it’s time for a useful entry for expats and for those who are moving to Haiti.
As a graphic designer, I put much emphasis on my personal environment. In a perfect world it would be silent and well-designed but I live in a not so perfect piece of Haiti in Montagne Noir. So, here are some tips to keep in mind when finding a place in Haiti.

1. Hire a local real estate agent. Sure they may charge a 50%-of-the-rent-fee but they will find you a place with your budget and specifications. They will also help you out with issues that you might encounter. They also make the process of finding a place in Haiti faster and easier.
2. Location, location. Take places close to PV (Pétion Ville). Higher than PV like Laboule and Kenscoff is nicer but travel time to PV ranges from: with traffic 1-1.5 hours and without traffic 10-20 minutes. Lower than PV, well, good luck. Also, never take a place that is too isolated.
3. Once you find a place, check if it’s structurally sound. Then check if you have electricity 24-hours a day and "clean" running water—clean meaning you don’t see green stuff or particles floating on the water and it doesn’t smell too much of Clorox.

Whitespacelover Haiti apartment study
Custom-made corner desk in the study room that is rarely used. Dining room is better for work. ;-)

4. Very important, prick your ears. If you can hear cars passing by or people talking then it only gets worst. So, abandon or buy some earplugs or noise cancelling earphones.
5. Look for generators. If you see it, you’ll probably hear it. The only choice here is to go look for a new place. Otherwise you’ll never get peace in your new place. You don’t want to sleep to the hum of diesel engines at night or wake up to the early morning fumes.
6. They say the devil is in the details. Look under the sinks, inside the closets, toilet bowls and turn on faucets and showers. If you see something leaking or water trails ask to get it fixed before you move.
7. Test the doorknobs and locks. Though not common, it’s not unheard of people getting locked in or out of their apartments.

So, there you have it. Keep in mind though that we’re in Haiti and most places may not be up to the standards of the country that you used to live in. Be patient and learn to adapt to it.

Digital Illustration: Le Clos, Haiti

digital illustration: le clos haiti

When somewhere new they say, “do as the Romans do.” In Haiti, well… This digital conté crayon drawing of where we used to live was an attempt in naïve style—a popular style in Haiti. Tried my best to be naïve. Unfortunately, when you’re a designer things has to make visual sense, perspective, colors, light and shadows etc. and this logic is like OS X pre-installed in your brain. Though what’s good about being a designer is even if you can’t be naïve, you can still wiggle your way out to create a half-way naïve art. Actually, more like wiggling your way into creating Frankenstein.

Alright, let’s roll baby! Here we go again, Gaz Kole Entertainment presents, Ba Li Gaz 2011! A street drag race for supercars, mosnter bikes, ATVs and UTV’s! Claim your bragging right in the first official drag race in Haiti! Check out the race venue here

Designing things for Gaz Kole is fun! There’s something about cars and speed that motivate designers more than pretty models posing in front of the camera… needing a bit of Photoshop. You could almost hear tires screeching and engines roaring when you do designs like this. Digitally adding the smoke effect was pure pleasure, like eating double bacon cheese burgers while running 200kmH on the streets of Port Au Prince, but of course without the jackhammer effect and crazy traffic common in Haitian streets.

So don’t forget to checkout Gaz Kole’s Ba Li Gaz 2011!

Logo & Teaser Design Gaz Kole

Teaser Design for Gaz Kole
Gaz Kole teaser design.

It’s a fact of life that you feel like your car is being caressed by a jackhammer when you drive on the streets of Port au Prince, but that doesn’t stop some people in owning supercharged vehicles here. Recently Jn-Michel Carvonis, a super car owner in Haiti started blogging about how it is to own these wonderful set of roaring wheels in Haiti. And we were more than happy to be obliged in creating a logo and a teaser design for him. We can’t stop shouting “Gaz Kole vvvrrrrrooom!” and feel the pedal to floor while creating the designs. Even after submitting the artworks, we still couldn’t stop hearing growling engines and screeching breaks in our heads.

So if you’re a car enthusiast check out www.gazkole.blogspot.com. Even if you hardly go from 0-60 in 5 seconds, this blog is still worth the look. Maybe after reading the blog you’ll learn how to say, “let’s roll” with a Fast & The Furious Vin Diesel voice to your girl.

Barbancourt: un portrait

Rhum Barbancourt Billboard in Petion-Ville Haiti
Rhum Barbancourt, Portrait Famille 2011 Billboard. And yes, we were contemplating about how the white rhum lands against the black BG too.

The simplest design is always the best design. Rhum Barbancourt first fell on my hands in my first few days in Haiti. How me and the team wished it was a nice glass of rhum sour instead of a piece of paper telling you to make print ads and billboards.
We turned into coffee-powered zombies for days trying to cough up some fancy-schwancy designs for one of the biggest brands in Haiti, but to no avail. Then one day, just before the caffeine high permanently turns into clinical depression, it came… the beginnings of Portrait Famille. First as an accidental layout that later became a design that Barbancourt approved with much hoorah. In fact, they loved it so much that this year’s new Barbancourt design was just a modification of the original Portrait Famille. Hmmm, if memory serves well, last year's design was also the 1st Portrait Famille. Dang! They love that design.

Rhum Barbancourt Billboard in Haiti
The first version of Rhum Barbancourt's Portrait Famille billboard. Look at the upper right-hand corner of the 2011 Billboard, there are still remnants of the first design (with reduced opacity).

Looking back though, if you put the fancy-schwancy design attempts side by side with Portrait Famille, it would look like you're putting wicked stepmothers + big bad wolf vs Disney princess. So moral lesson, keep it simple. Always works, promise.

TV Commercial: Oishi Prutalastas

Prutalastas. Two words in Filipino, Prutas (fruit) Patalastas (TV commercial). So in English, that’s Fruit TV commercial. Hmm, sounds better in Filipino. It’s an invented word courtesy of our Creative Director back in Creative Juice\ Manila. The TVC's storyboard was one of the last TVCs I illustrated/conceptualized before I left the The Motherland. Actually, there were several boards for this ad. This one got chosen, and my colleagues went on to produce it. So, voilà, a nice TV commercial. Simple concept and clean execution. Back then I never thought that my idea had wings.

I know, I know, I’ve been going through my archives a lot lately.

Graphic Design for VIP +Booze

It’s true that in Haiti activities range from, uhh, ten-thousand types of drinking and eating and party activities (a.k.a. socializing). So, who ever told you that there’s nothing to do in Haiti is sorely mistaken! Best of all an international DJ is coming on the 8th to little town Haiti to make the party hot! So if you want to be in one of the coolest event in town and be the man with the VIP table at Taras, like Prestige in Facebook and join the contest! And remember, the VIP table comes with booze (I imagine it to be free booze galore!).

Book Design: Nazareno

Stumbled upon this book design in my archives from our publication office back at The University of the Philippines Diliman Information Office. It was a project on the 400 years of devotion to The Black Nazarene in the Philippines. It was a nice project. Unfortunately, I moved to a new career in an advertising agency as an art director before the project saw its completion.

Book jacket design: Nazareno
Book jacket. The book was an unfinished project with Prof. Rubén D.F. Defeo of The Univeristy of the Philippines, Diliman... wonder what happened to it? Cover photo is an original photo from my colleague in UPDIO, Leonardo Reyes.

Sample spread design: Nazareno
Sample spread of the book. Look at all the lorem ipsum! The photos here was taken from Google for demonstration purposes.

It is funny to see this now. At the time, I was struggling to disprove god’s existence never knowing that what I was actually struggling against was not god but the form of established religion that has lost its spiritual essence. Little did I know that eventually this will lead me to discover the path to what Ekhart Tole and other contemporary spiritual teachers call “The True Religion.”

Illustration: Social Media in Haiti

digital illustration
Quick illustration on free time.

Some illustration done for a colleague at PubliGestion. The mastermind behind the social media department, yes I was just the department’s conspirator. It gave me a sense of fun (like we’re doing something really, really cool to change Haiti) when we were creating the social media accounts, not to mention doing the PG Blog and writing its first entry! Designing and creating all those visual elements to jump-start PubliGestion’s Social Media Department after the 7.o-you-know-what in Haiti is something that was very fun to do and I’m personally looking forward to doing this again!
So to my colleague, kudos to you and to the fun we had in changing the social media landscape in Haiti!

State of Whitespacelover

state of whitespacelover
Let's cover this map with more colors! ;-)

After two weeks of silence here at Whitespacelover, a silence due to life’s ups and downs, the lover is back again! No excuses though. So let’s start with the state of Whitespacelover. I’m very pleased to inform that a lot of changes happened to the blog since it’s inception last year namely:
  1. I’m very happy to report that since the 28th of March, we’ve been gathering more and more visits from all over the world—we have visitors as far as Russia, more and more visits from Europe and the US. Thank you all! The visitor’s map looks a lot better with colours all over it. Top five visits come from Haiti, US, Philippines and then surprisingly Switzerland followed by Germany! The visits may not amount to thousands but nonetheless Merci beaucoup ! Thank you! Salamat po! Und danke!
  2. Whitespacelover.com is now an officially registered domain. Making it more search engine friendly. Gives it a nice image too and opens up possibilities!
  3. Some SEO practices were implemented to the site, namely:
    • The introduction of meta tags and alt tags in the images. For some reason the bots love those.
    • Titles are now geared towards being search engine friendlier.
    • And of course, the obvious, using labels and peppering entries with keywords. The better optimization for search engines, the quicker the content gets to you or to people searching over the web.
Life might’ve thrown in its unpleasant surprise this month, but life just gets better and better. More good things to come in the future, so stay tuned for the next entries.
If you want to see specific things that are more relevant to you, please leave your requests on the comment page below. Thank you!

Logo Padmasana

Keeping on a positive note, which we had for the past entries, here is a logo study made for Padmasana, the wellness clinic. It was a healing clinic in Pétion Ville, Haiti before the 7.o-you-know-what. It’s not exactly your typical clinic but it’s more like healing through meditation and connecting with your inner self. Personally, the singing bowls session (plus crystals) is enough to make everything alright. It’s as if you’re feeling your body for the first time. Inner peace oOoohhmmmmmmm, Oooohhmmmm...

Padmasana illustrated logo
This is the logo that got approved. Followed all the request of the client. ;-) The request, a lotus flower logo with very organic lines.
Padmasana logo, grey
I personally like this one. Maybe it could still be revised to make it more simple.
Padmasana logo, black
Okay, least favorite, but some people really like it.

Photos Feel Goood

When gloomy days come, as creatives we look for ways to bring the sunny days back in our life so we could continue being designers, artists and, ahem, lovers or whatever role we play. It’s simply hard to come up with nice designs when you feel like your insides have turned into mash potatoes, even your swift 15-inch MacBook Pro feels like it’s been wrongly injected with a decaf espresso when you're not in-sync!
So What to do? As for me, when these days come I turn to my personal Happy Days Archive, a.k.a iPhoto and Canon S95. It simply lifts you up to see vacation pictures, friends smiling, silly videos etc. Of course, no one can expect you to find endorphins seeing my family and friends fooling around, so let me just share these nice sunny pictures that is sure to make anyone feel better. Enjoy!

For The Love of Whitespace

swiss style graphic design

“But whitespace is more than just a design style that was attacked and defended in Switzerland.  As often demonstrated in Whitespacelover, it’s a discipline. It’s everywhere and in everything we do. It’s the lull between melodies, the calm before a storm, the breath before an I love you too, the stillness in prayers and the silence that allows us to communicate. Whitespace is life!”

When whitespacelovers are not busy eating, breathing and loving designs, they’re usually working as designers for creative agencies.
Here’s an entry, written by yours truly, at PubliGestion’s Bloggers Block—a blog where I also co-write. It’s a celebration or more like a tribute to The Swiss Style Design also known as, International Typographic Style or International Style. Without it our appreciation for excellent designs will not be the same. Of course, this is a visual design blog, so here are some visual goodies I created for this entry at PubliGestion.

Okay, let’s be happy today. It’s the weekend! Just found these illustrations that we could all get amused with. No complicated designs or effects today, just nice colors and lines.
Personally, I’m amused by how technology has evolved. Now we could draw straight in the computer using Wacom. Would really love to have a Wacom Cintiq one of these days, it’ll be a good upgrade to my Wacom Bamboo.
And I need to say it again, whitespace is not always white.

The Tycoon. Digital illustration in Photoshop. It's amazing how dreams in your head could turn into an illustration.

Modern tycoon-inspired illustration... actually more like Austin Power’s archnemesis Doctor Evil world domination kind of inspiration. A bit Chinese in theme, especially with the three dragons, Kuan Kung and the money tree on the side. Oh, the furniture is also Chinese, based on the emperor's dark hardwood chair and table.
Notice how whitespace is not always white.

Packaging Design: Belly Deli

Belly Deli rice meal is project with Creative Juice /Manila 5 years ago, but I never saw its completion.
Adobo is a traditional Filipino dish of pork marinated and cooked with vinegar, soy sauce, bay leaves and pepper corns.
Tinapa is smoked milk fish  typically sold by street vendors in the Philippines.
Bagoong is a Filipino shrimp paste, sometimes made with crushed chili. Can be found in a salty-sweet or salty-hot variant.

Here are 5 reasons why we love working on Belly Deli’s packaging designs and why we would love to do more packaging designs in the future.
  1. Packaging design incorporates all design and marketing aspects—logo, look, feel, legal requirements, shelf visibility etc.
  2. Packaging design is the root of upcoming materials, such as posters, brochures, flyers and TVCs. Like a logo, a packaging is present everywhere. Personally, I think it is the less corporate version of a logo.
  3. You need to think in terms of 3D when you make a packaging. There is front, back (in other cases side and bottom.) the material it’s made from, the thing that it will contain etc. It's a refreshing break from the 2D world.
  4. When you’ve finally produced a packaging and see it come to life, it feels like you’re seeing/holding the Holy Grail.
  5. Hands down, it’s fun to do packaging! You can play with it more.

Ultimate Whitespace

One of the wonderful things you could do, is to exercise. It’s uncommon to many creatives to actually hit the gym, eat right and sleep right. It is as if a designing job comes with certain habits that naturally lead to a less healthy living. That’s why it's nice to work on the design and copywriting of a fitness centre. It somewhat awakens your gym mindset.
When you need to bring the best out of a brand/client, it also brings out the best in you.

Ultimate Fitness logo, was actually conceived thanks to a colleague's belt shape. The U in the logo is actually her, demonstrating a yoga position in our office at PubliGestion. It's surprising where inspiration comes.

Milk & Whitespace

An ad we did at PubliGestion for NB magazine. One of the first ads in Haiti to have this much whitespace.

Designer lands in Haiti like little David in front of a design Frankenstein goliath of clashing colors, shouting fonts and busy background. But David meets him, mouse in hand, Mac Book Pro on the other. He triumphs! Yey!
It’s a real challenge to spar with the common design sense in Haiti, where less is not more and where whitespace is a waste. But if you ask me, it’s also the reason why a brand should be  celebrated for coming up with an ad that is clean and with plenty of whitespace.
We never thought that such a clean predominantly white layout could ever see the light of production, but we were wrong. Client approved the design! So let’s celebrate the Viva ad for it’s clean layout and generous whitespace—a rarity in Haiti. Yey!

Super Designers

One of those nice magazine ads created in PubliGestion S.A.

Like Flash imbued with super speed, you go down to the brasserie, whip your camera out, zoom pass from one tank to the other, click, click, hop back to the car, jump into Photoshop, edit, edit, layout, design… the next morning client and colleagues come wowed by your superhero feat!
One of the joys of working as a graphic designer in Haiti is it pushes you to your limits and forces you to go out of your comfort zone. With tight deadlines (very tight) and with the least amount of resources you find yourself creating a design that would’ve taken twice the time and thrice the resources in other countries.
This Brana ad was created like that. The result is a pleasing design. Of course, the first paragraph is an exaggeration of speed but I imagine (actually, it feels like it) that’s how we work as graphic designers in Haiti. Haha!

We missed last week, no activity, no visitors. Though, for the coming days and weeks, expect some serious activity from this blog—illustrations, designs and some demonstration of Photoshop-ing skills.
So, let me make it up to you on a Sunday with an illustration in India ink done a few years back when we’re all studying in art school. The two illustrations on the right is an exercise on non-representational design. To the left, a snake.

In Haiti & PubliGestion

Living in Haiti for the past few years have been pleasurable, fun and challenging. Work at PubliGestion, the leading ad agency in the country, has made my stay here fruitful and rich with wonderful experiences—by working with local clients and products you get a unique understanding of the country and the people.
Read more about Haiti in PubliGestion’s blog where I also co-write. There is more to this country than what you see in the news. Check out these entries that would open your eyes to the real Haiti:

The third entry is always special, rule of three. It’s time to get to know each other… There is built-in stats in Blogger and there is also Google Analytics, this blog uses both. So now, its time to say some very specific thanks for the visits:
Pour les Haitiens et les Suisses (Françaises), merci beacoup ! To the US, thank you! Sa mga kabayan, salamat po! Brasiliero, obrigado! Nach Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz, danken! To the visitors in Hungary, Singapore and Indonesia thank you! (sorry don’t know how to say it in your native tongue.)

So now, here’s some pieces of wisdom about stats and analytics from a prehistoric T-rex behind this blog be sure to listen!

  1. If you’re using Analytics, be sure to filter out the IP Addresses of your computer, laptop and captive audiences such as officemates, bestfriend, girlfriend and those that will visit your site on your demand. This skews your numbers and doesn’t give you a true picture of what’s happening to your site. The saying "a traffic is a traffic," is complete BS.
  2. Get Google Analytics. It’s a lot better than Blogger Stats. You have more specialized tools.
  3. If you’re planning to SEO your blog and get an idea for keywords, Analytics will definitely help you.
  4. If you want to get more intimate with your readers, pay close attention to how they use your site and which pages they read and go to.
  5. And finally, use analytics information wisely. Here are some examples:
    • Develop content that are relevant to your readers.
    • Thank them in their own language. This is fun. Haha! ;-)

So there you have it. Third entry and we already have tips&tricks!  Wow. Till next time!

SEO Whitespacelover

Borrowing tilt-boring-image concept from Magznetwork. Haha! >;-)

Whitespacelover soft launch via Twitter went, uh… let’s not say bad words. Look on the bright side, this blog is now 2 entries old, tested on a PC, search engine optimized (SEO for the web savvy) and now ready to be announced on Facebook. Family and friends, get ready for Phase 3!
We’re not going to spend this entry talking about how to step by step SEO your blog, but let me just extend a helping hand to the old timer—pre-facebook bloggers—and to the newbs. Here’s a link to a complete guide on how to SEO your blog from Magznetwork Solution.
Like what was said in the last entry, don’t try to be what you’re not, don’t write CSS when you can copy-paste it for free. Gets the work done faster, easier with the same or better result.

Hello World: Whitespace Love is On!

This was the original plan for the blog... proved to be too much work & involvement. -_-"

Finally, after much mental masturbation and procrastinating (since, errr, last year), Whitespacelover blog is up and running! Writing you from the sunny island, Haiti.
Much could be said about trying to be things which you’re not, and that is the excuse for the delayed release of this blog: if you’re a graphic designer you don’t try to code CSS for a blog template, that’s like trying to become fluent in Chinese in 10 seconds! It’s a real waste of time. You’re better off reciting all Photoshop hotkeys to impress the ladies.
So without further blah blahs, let me introduce you to Whitespacelover—an online space for my portfolio, recent works and anything of visual nature! Expect a few tips and tricks along the way and from time to time, some emo entries, so bear with me. But for the most part we’ll all be love, life and peace.
Enjoy! More good things to come!
